  • Summer Fun in Mid-Coast Maine!

    May 30th, 2013

Courtesy of: Take Me 2 Camden

This week, and ALL last week, hasn’t really felt like summer.  In fact, we’re thinking those “April showers” missed the memo and are making up for it by giving us “May showers” instead.  However, today is a beautiful day in Mid-Coast Maine and it’s making us think about the upcoming summer.

If you’re planning a trip or move to Maine this summer, here are some fun ideas to consider:

    • Go to the beach!  There are a number of wonderful beaches throughout Maine, including Birch Point State Park, Crescent Beach in Owls Head, Laite Beach in Camden, among others.

    • Take a trip to Acadia National Park.  There’s plenty of hiking, beaching, swimming, and exploring available at Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor.

    • Taste some local wines on the “Nap-ah” Valley Wine Tour.  All Aboard Trolley and Limousine hosts a guided tour through the Midcoast Maine area to three local wineries: Savage Oakes Winery, Sweetgrass Winery and Distillery, and Cellardoor Winery.  A relaxing and educational tour through Rockland, Union, Camden, and Lincolnville!

    • Visit some of our local historic towns.  Downtown Belfast, Rockland, and Camden are full of little shops to see and restaurants to eat at on the Maine coast.

    • Take a ferry ride to the local islands.  Vinalhaven, North Haven, Islesboro, Monhegan Island… each of these islands has a wonderful community and landscape that is fun to explore.

    • Sail on a Windjammer Cruise.  Camden Harbor and Rockland Harbor offer sailing tours of the local harbors.  Relax, enjoy, and learn all about the sailing industry on the Coast of Maine.

    • Paddle along on a sea kayaking tour.  These tours are available in a number of seaside locations along Mid-Coast Maine.  A fun, unique, and active way to enhance your Maine experience!

The list doesn’t end here; there is plenty to do in Maine. Each of our real estate agents has a thorough knowledge of the areas in which they work and live and are happy to give you as much information as you’d like!

    Agent Highlight: Beverly Doherty

    May 15th, 2013

Waldo County has a number of wonderful Jaret and Cohn listings, and who better to help you find a home in this community than Beverly Doherty?

Beverly works out of our Belfast office and has been a Jaret and Cohn real estate agent since October 21, 2001.  She loves staying busy, and she’s looking forward to this being a great year for sales!  Buyers are buying, and it will keep her on her toes this year!  If potential buyers ask her about living in Midcoast Maine, she loves to tell them about everything there is to do in the area.  Kayaking, hiking, and a number of other outdoor activities are some of the things that she likes to highlight.  “There’s so much beauty!” Beverly says of Midcoast Maine.

In her free time, Beverly enjoys gardening at her home in Camden and being outside.  She recently picked up kayaking; she loves going out on a lake or calm river to relax and decompress.

For an example of one of her listings, take a look at her Beaver Pond Road property in Swanville!  Gorgeous views of Swan Lake from this 3 bedroom / 2 bathroom Cape!

Visiting the Maine Coast for Memorial Day?

    May 8th, 2013

The long weekend for Memorial Day signals the official start of summer, and that means the official start of Tourist Season in Maine.  If you’re planning a Memorial Day trip to Maine for the three day weekend, we have some recommendations for you and your family.

    • Watch a local parade and Memorial Day ceremony

Maine’s communities celebrate Memorial Day with parades through towns and ceremonies in honor of their veterans and fallen soldiers.  The local parade in Camden goes right by our Jaret and Cohn office!  If you’re visiting for the weekend, join the community in their local traditions!

    • Picnic on the beach

If the weather’s nice, take a trip to one of the local beaches for a picnic.  Birch Point State Park in Owls Head, Maine and Laite Beach in Camden, Maine are great locations to enjoy a nice day at the beginning of summer!

    • Hike up Mount Battie

Take a leisurely hike, walk, or drive up Mount Battie! Spectacular views of Camden Harbor are a must-see while you’re visiting the area.  Edna St. Vincent Millay also wrote her famous poem, “Renascence,” about this view.

    • Trade in hot dogs for lobster

You’re in Maine… Why not celebrate Memorial Day with lobsters from a local fisherman instead of hot dogs and hamburgers?  Lobsters, corn on the cob, and dinner rolls make for a much better dinner anyway!

From all of us here at Jaret and Cohn Real Estate, we hope you enjoy your trip to Maine this month!  For more information about our company, check out our website and listings at http://www.jaretcohn.com/.

    Agent Highlight: Wes Reed

    April 10th, 2013

Gorgeous properties on two of Maine’s islands, Vinalhaven and North Haven, are just a short distance off the coast of Rockland.  Wesley Reed is the Branch Manager at The Island Group for Jaret and Cohn Real Estate, and has worked for Jaret and Cohn for 28 years.

Wes moved to Vinalhaven from Mexico, Maine in 1976 and never looked back!  Before he started working for Jaret and Cohn in 1985, Wes worked as both a building contractor and an installer of septic systems on Vinalhaven.  Our clients appreciate his experience with homes and his knowledge of island living.

According to Wes, Vinalhaven is the third largest island off the coast of Maine.  The island contains a large grocery store, which often has cheaper prices than the stores on the mainland, a lumber yard, 4 plumbers, and 3 electricians.  The island has a population of 1,300 year-round residents; this number grows to 4,000 during the summer.  North Haven is about half the size of Vinalhaven, but also boasts many year-round residents and ferry access on a daily basis.  “I truly love living here,” Wes said of his home on Vinalhaven.

Wes hopes to see the continued increase of serious home buyers.  “There’s a confidence that seems to be coming back,” he said of the housing market.

Aside from real estate, Wes has a Masters in Fine Arts in Sculpture.  He has his own granite business, Vinalhaven Granite Works. He is a member of the Vinalhaven Fire Department, the Vinalhaven Lions Club, and loves collecting antique lighting.  He also owns two antique cars, one which is a Model A Ford that he’s had since he was fifteen.

It’s time to get ready for summer!

    April 3rd, 2013

It’s starting to really feel like spring!  The snow is melting and the air feels a bit warmer.  Have you started thinking about spring cleaning, or spring projects?  There are a number of post-winter home improvements that homeowners should do to get their homes ready for the summertime.

    • Take a good look at your roof.  Have your roof inspected for damages, fly-aways, and leaks.  Winter damage is common for roofs, and spring is a great time to get these repairs done.

    • Seed the dead spots on your lawn.  April showers bring May flowers, so seed the spots early and let the rain water your lawn for you.

    • Survey your property for damage.  Make sure unwelcome guests haven’t burrowed under your home during the winter, and fix things like holes in the walls and window cracks to keep the little critters from getting inside.

    • Repair any drainage problems.  During the spring, it is easy to see how the water is moving through your yard.  It is a great time to fix your gutters, unclog downspouts, and and make sure water is being drained to the appropriate areas of your property.

    • Prepare outdoor spaces.  During the summer, many homeowners enjoy spending time outside.  Get your outdoor spaces ready for summer by hiring a landscaper to build or repair your patio, dust off your outdoor furniture, and clean up your yard.

Green Home Ideas for St. Patty’s Day

    March 17th, 2013

    Source: www.lowell.org

Traditionally, green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day.  As much as we love the color green, what are some things that you could do to make your home a little more “green” economically?

Looks like you’re in for some of that good ol’ luck of the Irish!  Here are some ideas to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint in your homes.

    1. Turn off the lights and use natural lighting in your home during the day.  In the evening, turn off the lights when you leave the room.

    2. Instead of buying plastic, disposable water bottles, buy a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day.

    3. Wash your laundry in cold water instead of hot.  In the summertime, line dry your clothes instead of using the dryer.

    4. Shut down your computer at night.

    5. Have an energy audit conducted on your home.

    6. Pay your bills online to save paper.  It’s also more convenient!

    7. Support your local economy by shopping at a farmers’ market.

    8. Create a home compost bin.

    9. Switch your lightbulbs to CFLs.

    10. Buy reusable grocery bags at the grocery store for your shopping trips.

Decorating your home for St. Patrick’s Day is great, but making your home truly green is even better!
